A question about...what now?
Here’s a thought:
A photographer is walking through a village. In this village, it is not uncommon for there to be some amount of nudity. Men don’t always cover themselves, and neither do women. And of course, why buy diapers when you can just let your babies run around in the buff.
Said photographer captures a single picture of a young baby boy, naked and quite happy with it....
That one perfect roll
Do you ever get that one roll, that out of a dozen other rolls, just seems to glow? its that roll where every shot somehow came out perfect, even the ones that didn’t. The one where you were so damn sure that you screwed something up, either with the push processing you did, or putting it onto the reel, or whatever.
yet it comes out perfect. 36 good frames out of 36, or something like...

With all due respect to digital photographers, I’m afraid I just have to agree with everything about this.
Being able to take a picture and photoshop it into something doesn’t necessarily make you a good photographer. It does, however, make you good at photoshop. And thats not to take away from any legitimate photography skills that help to create a final post-processed creation, but...

ethuan asked: Great stuff on this blog! Looking forward to more pictures and findings. I LOVE shooting with my AE1 as well. AE1 FTW!!
Silverfast
Playing around with Silverfast AI6 - It is a LOT faster than the standard Epson V500 software, although it is about 1/10th as intuitive as far as using it. That said, so far, the scan quality is very nice - the colors look better in general on some of the color film I’ve scanned so far. Still need to try color slide - I’ll post side-by-side comparisons a bit later, comparing what I did...
Back from India, damned x-rays
Blah.
So perhaps its paranoia, but I’m almost not wanting to scan the rolls of film I took to India.
I overstocked, and of course every two-bit indian military guard at the airports felt that ‘film safe’ means ‘fuck you and your film,’ so i had at least 4 x-rays. Furthermore, a security officer in Singapore’s Changi airport noted that the Indian x-ray...

What To Take
Looking for some advice on what to stock for a 20 day trip to India.
My kit is going to be a Canon A1 for the 35mm, and a Mamiya C330 with 50, 80, 135, and 250mm lenses for the whole mix.
For black and white in 35mm, I’m probably going to take 10-15 rolls of Acros 100, but i’m not sure for the 400 film - i’m leaning to TMAX, for the ability to push to 800 and 1600 for when I...
Oh the reds
Had a chance to play with mah red filter and yellow filter in Zion canyon.
Lets take a look - no histogram this time, just pictures.
Canon A1, 50mm lens, Tripod mounted with no filter
Nice, clean image. Has some blacks, some whites, and a lot in between. A nice, simple shot.
Canon A1, 50mm lens, tripod mount, sh*t vivitar yellow lens.
Where did the highlights go? Not sure, the yellow...

Ektar and Velvia - Latitude Comparison
So I had an opportunity to shoot both the Kodak Ektar 100 and the Velvia 50, the former a C-41 positive and the latter color slide.
I like both films for different reasons. Velvia does indeed have incredible color saturation and fantastic representation - It’s rare that I can get a negative that shows a clear, blue, crisp sky. It does have its downsides, in that color slide has poor...
ekko-foto asked: Those "log-in to see content" blogs are virus-bots and the like, so you might want to change your password, hehe. Great blog btw!
Sorry to a few of you
I’ve been trying to check a few people who have started following me, but tumblr gives me an ‘adult warning’, and tells me to log back in to renew my credentials. Maybe you have pictures of naked people running about, maybe tumblr is prudish, I have no idea.
For some reason, when I log in to renew my credentials, i get re-directed to the preferences page, and not to your page,...
Shooting Film in Utah? What to Avoid
So, my family and I just got done with a lovely 5 day trek across southern Utah, which was a great lot of fun.
We visited Zion, Bryce, and the Antelope Valley, all of which are some great places to be. But I learned a few things from my trip that I’d like to pass on to you guys who shoot film.
Zion and Bryce are great for film, but you need to have the camera for it. My Mamiya C330 shoots...

Scan VS Print
Finally scanned up the prints from ages ago, and have a few comparisons for you guys!
First of all, the negative:
The negative is scratched, while it was exiting the carrier. Sadness and despair :/
And the print!
Yeah, not that different, I know. At least not by scanning. The actual print looks silky smooth, with no digital bullshittyness. I do need to burn the hair a bit though.
And...
Infrared Fumble
Heading to Zion and Brice Canyon this weekend with family.
Bought two rolls of the Rollei infared film - I have a 950nm 52mm filter for my 50mm Canon lens that I’ll be using.
I bought two more rolls of 120 to put through the Mamiya, but realized too late that I had forgotten to purchase a infrared filter for the 46 and 49mm lenses, though I’d just use the 46
What I’m going...

The First Printing Run
I spent about 8 hours printing yesterday, sitting in a small closet with stinking stop bath trying to figure my way around printing.
appeal to emulsion, my ever present guide in photography, guided me through the printing process some time ago, in his much wider and well-established garage/darkroom.
He taught me the contrast-printing process, by which you do test strips with 0 and 5 filters,...

Developing Steel
I really dislike 35mm steel reels.
I mean, seriously, in the dark, I can never get it right. I always seem to miss one of the two inner rings, which leaves like 6 to 8 inches of leftover material which doesn’t develop. It crinkles everything until the first 6 exposures look like I’m a photo abuser. It makes me sad.
At the same time, its the easiest way to develop 3 to 4 reels in my...

HC-110
I have been gifted the gift of developer!
Prasad, the photographer who was kind enough to sell me his old Beseler 45MX, also bequethed unto me a ton of old chemicals that we figured would still be in good condition.
One of them is a bottle of HC-110, unopened. It’s probably at least a decade old, but from what I’ve read, this stuff keeps.
I’m thinking of developing a roll of...
Forcing Aperture on reverse ring lens
Two things:
1: If anyone out there is familiar with using a reverse ring, how did you lock the aperture lever so that you don’t have to hold it? I’ve no idea what kind of ‘part’ i could use to do this
2: I have no idea how to respond to my own posts. As of such, to respond to Mr. JohnCarlton from some time ago, I scan using an Epson V500, typically at 24 bit between...

Mamiya C330 + Kodak E100 = wtf?
Note to self - slide film works really, really well when there are lots of pretty colors. Not so well for everything else.
that said, a few pictures came out acceptable.
This one is my favorite so far
In any case, I might be going back up the 395, closer to the evening hours, so I’m going to take another roll of color slide - I’m sticking to 100G, because that was color rich as...

The Next (great?) experiment
In light of the failure of my last experiment, I’m hoping to embark at some point during the next two weeks another attempt at discerning the proper development time of Ilford DDX when diluted at 1:9 with Fuji Acros film.
A good friend, Appeal to Emulsion . gave me some ideas for a better procedure that, while definitely more time consuming, would also produce more accurate results.
Unlike...
Shooting with Ilford DD-X and Acros
I decided to take a chance and run two rolls of 120 Acros through my leftover DD-X, which was mixed at 1:9. I gave it 15.5 minutes, at exactly 20C, to see what would happen.
The negatives did not turn out badly, but there are a few issues. I should have let it sit for about 16 minutes, as that would have cleaned up some of the images that I shot indoors or in the shade, but the shots I took of...
adventuresinfilm asked: There are instructions for re-use in the DD-X datasheet. I've reused it a number of times with good results.
Also, Kodak T-MAX dev claims a capacity of 12 films per litre working solution (add 1 min after 4, 2 mins after 8) and claims a storage life of 6 months for the working strength solution.

Experimenting with Ilford DD-X and Acros: The Lab...
Lab Complete. Results posted Below
I have 3 8 X 10 trays, and one tub with which I will fill with clean water. I have my film loaded onto a spool temporarily, which is inside a Paterson tank. I will be doing a 5 minute pre-rinse, to make sure most of the extra gunk is washed off. This should do two things: 1) keep the development consistent, as I always pre-wash, so that removes one variable...
